Pendleton Midnight Canadian Whisky

Pendleton Midnight is the richer step up in Hood River Distillers' Pendleton line, launched in September 2015. Hood River, the Oregon company that calls itself the largest and oldest importer, distiller, producer and bottler of spirits in the Northwest, sources the whisky from an undisclosed Canadian distillery and then finishes and bottles it in Hood River. What sets Midnight apart is the wood: the blend is roughly six years old, and a portion of it is aged in American brandy barrels, which Hood River says brings fruit-forward character along with leather and warm spice. It's cut to 90 proof (45% ABV) with glacier-fed spring water from Mt. Hood, the same water used across the Pendleton range. Reviewers back up the brandy influence: The Daily Pour noted raspberry cream and peach candy on the nose, then waxy fruit, apple, vanilla custard and plum, with cinnamon and clove turning to muddled cherry on the finish, while Drinkhacker found spiced raisin, black tea, maple and butterscotch and a slightly jammy finish. More depth and proof than standard Pendleton, it's good neat or on a large cube and makes a fruit-leaning Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
