Père Labat Réserve Familiale 6 Year Rhum
Père Labat is the rhum of Distillerie Poisson on Marie-Galante, the small, flat, windmill-dotted island off Guadeloupe that many agricole drinkers consider the purest expression of French Caribbean cane. The distillery was founded in 1916 by Édouard Rameau and named for Père Jean-Baptiste Labat, the Dominican friar who modernized rum distillation in the French Antilles around 1700. Cane is cut by hand, crushed within hours, fermented slowly on fresh juice, and run through a red-copper Creole column. Réserve Familiale is the house's aged rhum, matured six years in oak and bottled at 42% ABV. Marie-Galante's white rhums are known for their power, and that same cane intensity carries through the wood here: sweet bagasse and pepper on the nose, then a velvety palate where the cane spice gives way to vanilla, dried fruit, and gentle oak. It's an aged agricole that still tastes like where it came from, easy to sip neat and just as good in an Old Fashioned.
