Isle of Raasay Ex-Woodford Reserve Rye Cask Strength is a single-cask-type release from the young distillery founded in 2017 on the tiny Isle of Raasay, off the coast of Skye, and named Scottish Distillery of the Year. Its unpeated spirit was matured entirely in American ex-rye whiskey casks from the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Kentucky, whose 53% rye mash bill leaves the wood with strong peppery, spicy character in a sea of fruit and butterscotch.
Bottled at a natural cask strength of 127 proof (63.5% ABV), non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, in a 700mL bottle, the rye casks develop interesting pepper, spice and butterscotch flavors in Raasay's clean Hebridean malt: orchard fruit, honey and vanilla on the nose with rye spice, then a rich palate of butterscotch, baked apple, black pepper and gentle oak, finishing long and warming. A limited bottling for collectors and a fascinating pour for American whiskey fans crossing into Scotch.
