Rabbit Hole has no family recipe and no dormant Prohibition-era history, and founder Kaveh Zamanian says so openly — the whole brand is built on the opposite premise. Zamanian fled Tehran in 1979, became a clinical psychologist and practiced for over twenty years, then met his wife Heather, a Louisville native, who introduced him to bourbon. He left the profession to launch Rabbit Hole in 2012; the name came from Heather's remark that he was taking the family down the rabbit hole. He's since been inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame, and the distillery opened its striking downtown Louisville home in 2018. The philosophy is mash bill diversity. Zamanian has been blunt that many Kentucky brands make one or two recipes and vary the proof, and he wanted no part of it — so every core expression uses a different grain recipe. Cavehill is a four-grain, triple-malt bourbon of corn, malted wheat, honey malted barley, and malted barley, entered into barrel at a low 110 proof and bottled non-chill filtered in batches never exceeding 15 barrels. Heigold is a high-rye bourbon built on malted rye. Boxergrail is a 95/5 Kentucky straight rye. Dareringer is a wheated bourbon finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Above them sits the Founder's Collection, with releases like the Mizunara-finished bottling.
