Ron Centenario's rums weren't even sold outside Costa Rica until 2007, and the 20 Year Fundación remains one of the brand's best-known ambassadors abroad. It's a Solera-style blend built from Costa Rican molasses, aged in American white oak (originally ex-bourbon) barrels for up to 20 years, with the youngest rum in the system continuously topped up beneath the oldest stock. Reviewers land all over the map on this one. Drinkhacker gave it an A-, describing an impressive balance between spirit-driven power and wood-aged elegance, with tobacco, sour cherry, cocoa, and a candied-strawberry sweetness on the finish. The Lone Caner called it "quietly excellent," warm and smooth with orange peel, caramel, and walnut, though noted it could stand to be a bit more assertive for serious rum drinkers. The Rum Barrel Blog was considerably harsher, scoring it just 44 out of 100 and finding it overly sweet and sticky for the price, with an earthy note that didn't sit well.
