Ron Centenario takes its name from Costa Rica's independence centennial, tracing back to a company originally founded in 1969 as Seagram de Costa Rica before releasing its first rum in 1985 and rebranding as Centenario Internacional in 2002. The distillery sits 1,208 meters above sea level, surrounded by rivers, volcanoes, and tropical forest, where that unique microclimate helps rums mature slowly and evenly. Everything starts from Costa Rican sugarcane molasses run through continuous column stills, then ages in oak under the guidance of Master Blender Susan Masis. The lineup splits into two styles: younger expressions (7, 9, and 12 Year Gran Legado) carry genuine age statements from straightforward barrel aging, while the older releases (18, 20 Year Fundación, 25 Year Gran Reserva, and the rare 30 Year Edición Limitada) use the Solera system, blending multiple vintages so the stated age reflects only the oldest rum in the mix. Expect the range to move from light, mixable rums built for cocktails up through rich, complex sippers loaded with dried fruit, caramel, and chocolate at the top end. All bottled at 40% ABV.
