Amrut Old Port Deluxe Rum

Old Port was the very first product Amrut ever made — back in the 1960s, decades before the Bangalore distillery's single malts turned it into one of the most respected names in world whisky. It's made from 100% Indian cane molasses, distilled on a column still, and aged in a mix of ex-whisky and new oak casks in the brutal heat of southern India, where the angel's share runs 10 to 12 percent a year (versus about 2 in Scotland), so a few years of tropical aging do what a decade does elsewhere. The scores are solid: 91 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, 88 from Tastings.com, and 86.5 from The Rum Howler, who found honey and butterscotch with zesty orange peel underneath, vanilla, tobacco, and lightly bitter raisin and date. Expect a mahogany pour with figs, dried cherries, cream soda, bread pudding, and sandalwood on the nose — Drinkhacker noted the dark sugary character isn't quite the classic Caribbean brown-sugar profile — opening into a dry, vibrant palate of toffee, bitter chocolate, five-spice, and something the Lone Caner could only describe as muscatel grape or prune that makes it unlike any other rum. Honest note: reviewers land on it as a good, complex mixer first and an occasional sipper second. Excellent with cola, and a genuine curiosity for anyone who's only known Amrut for whisky.
