Añejo Superior is Brugal's everyday rum — the bottle that made the house one of the three great B's of the Dominican Republic alongside Barceló and Bermudez, and the one you'll find behind more bars from Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata than any other. Andrés Brugal Montaner founded the company in 1888 after learning rum in Cuba, and the house is now run by its fifth generation of maestros roneros. The style is classic Spanish-Caribbean: molasses fermented with a proprietary yeast, double distilled on column stills for a light, clean spirit, then aged two to five years in medium-toast ex-bourbon American white oak, bottled at 40% ABV in the signature netted bottle — originally wrapped so the glass wouldn't slip in the tropical heat. Brugal says roughly 85% of its flavor comes from the wood, and it shows: The Rum Howler scored it 85/100, finding oak spice with firm butterscotch and orange peel and a depth that builds as you sip. Expect vanilla, banana, and a light nuttiness on the nose with gentle oak, opening into a fairly smooth palate with sweet fruit, oak, and tobacco, and a warm finish.
