Scapegrace Navy Strength Gin, sold as Scapegrace Gold, is the high-proof expression from Scapegrace Distillery in New Zealand, founded in 2014 by Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin and distilled under master distiller Anthony Lawry. It uses the same recipe as the brand's award-winning Classic gin: a neutral grain spirit small-batch distilled in a copper pot still with twelve botanicals including juniper, coriander, cassia, orris root, angelica, fennel, nutmeg, clove, tangerine peel and orange peel, then cut to 114 proof (57% ABV) with ancient water from the Southern Alps that fell as rain and snow roughly 80 years ago. Master of Malt describes a rounded, nutty nose of nutmeg, clove and fresh orange, a palate led by cassia and orris with lime, juniper and fennel over a spicy coriander core, and a floral finish of orris and angelica. The gin took Double Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Silver in the navy strength category at The Gin Masters and Silver Outstanding at the IWSC. At this strength it holds its shape in a Martini, drives a bold Negroni, and stands up to a heavy pour of tonic with a wedge of lime. 750ml bottle.
