The Soggy Dollar Bar sits on the sand at White Bay on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, with no dock, so sailors anchor offshore, swim in and pay with wet bills, which is where the name comes from; it is also the birthplace of the Painkiller, the rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juice cocktail finished with freshly grated nutmeg that has become the signature drink of the Caribbean charter crowd. Soggy Dollar Rum Ltd. is the spirits brand built on that bar by its owner, Jerry O'Connell, made in the British Virgin Islands for the bar and sold alongside a Dark Rum, triple distilled and oak-aged, and an Island Spiced bottling infused with citrus and island spices. The Platinum is the clear, unaged expression of the range, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml bottle. The producer publishes no tasting notes for it, which is fair enough: this is a mixing rum, meant for a Painkiller, a Daiquiri or a rum punch, built to disappear into coconut and pineapple on a boat somewhere warm, and the label is as much the point as what is inside.
