Spirited Union is the Amsterdam distillery founded by Ruben Maduro that calls itself the world's first botanical rum distillery, applying gin-style botanical distillation to aged rum instead of neutral spirit. The 300-square-meter distillery near Amsterdam Central opened in 2019, runs on solar power and is headed by distiller Marjolein Pot, who came from gin and built the library of botanical distillates the range is blended from. Pink Grapefruit, sold in Europe as Pink Grapefruit & Rose, starts with a floral cask-aged rum from Eswatini (Swaziland) in southern Africa. The peel of blush-pink grapefruit is distilled separately to complement that floral base, blood orange is infused into the rum to balance the sweetness with bittersweet and tart notes, and the spirit is finished by vapor-infusing garden rose petals and elderflower blossom. It is bottled at 38% ABV (76 proof). The producer describes it as bittersweet and sour with an intense floral aroma, grapefruit and blood orange on the nose, spicy citrus and rose on the palate and a lingering sweet, floral finish. Top it with tonic or soda over ice with a grapefruit wedge, or use it in place of gin in a Paloma or a spritz.
