Spirited Union calls itself the world's first botanical rum company, and the claim holds up. Founder Ruben Maduro, who grew up on the Caribbean island of Aruba and spent years developing cocktail recipes, opened the distillery in Amsterdam in 2017 with a specific target in mind: the artificial aromas and sickly-sweet spiced rums that dominate the category. His approach borrows the gin playbook and applies it to rum — sourcing single-origin rums from around the world, then uniting them with real botanicals through distillation, infusion, and barrel aging rather than added flavoring. The core range is built for mixing: Spice & Sea Salt starts with cask-aged Barbados rum and Madagascan vanilla; Lemon & Leaf, billed as the world's first botanical white rum, is a Mauritian cane juice agricole with Amalfi lemons, blue eucalyptus, kina bark, Sri Lankan black tea, Sarawak pepper, and sarsaparilla root; alongside Queen Pineapple & Spice, Pink Grapefruit & Rose, and Organic Coconut. A Reserve collection of double-cask expressions, finished in tailor-made botanical casks, is built for sipping. Head distiller Marjolein Pot came from gin, the 300-square-meter distillery runs on solar power, and Spice & Sea Salt and Lemon & Leaf both took silver at the London Spirits Competition. Rum that thinks like gin.
