El Mayor is four generations of González distillers in Arandas: Rodolfo runs Destiladora González Lux, NOM 1603, in the Los Altos highlands with his son Paul and daughter Graciela, growing estate agave at 7,500 feet in sandy, mineral soil; Luxco distributes it, which is why even the premium bottles are priced like a house brand. The Masters Collection Añejo is 100% estate-grown highland blue Weber agave, fermented with the family yeast, double-distilled in stainless pots with copper coils, aged in a selection of American white oak ex-bourbon barrels chosen by Rodolfo, and bottled at 40% ABV; check your bottle for the age and batch. Bourbon & Banter calls the standard Añejo the best of the line — roasted agave and buttery caramel, very smooth — and Agave Spirits Journey found cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, and spiced red fruit; the Masters Collection is the same house with the master's pick of casks.
