American Born was founded by a Notre Dame quarterback and a Marine. Patrick Dillingham and Sean Koffel — a former Fighting Irish QB and a US Marine Corps captain who served in Iraq — launched the brand in Nashville in 2013 with a line of mason-jar moonshines, and when they expanded into whiskey in 2017, they built the bourbon around a number: 83 proof, for 1783, the year the Revolutionary War ended and America was born. It's a straight bourbon made from a corn-and-rye mash bill, aged in new charred American oak, and non-chill filtered, which keeps the natural oils and body intact at the lower proof. The brand was acquired by Milestone Brands of Austin in 2016 — the team behind Deep Eddy Vodka — and the whiskey line followed.
