Founders KBS — Kentucky Breakfast Stout — is one of the most sought-after beers in America, an imperial stout brewed with coffee and chocolate and aged in bourbon barrels in the caves beneath Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bardstown Bourbon Company sent whiskey back into its barrels. This Collaborative Series release takes a 10-year-old Tennessee straight bourbon and finishes it for a long 15 months in freshly emptied KBS barrels, casks that had already carried bourbon to the brewery and returned carrying the stout's coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Drinkhacker rated it a B+ and called it a solid bourbon that earns points for uniqueness — not an everyday sipper, but sure to stump your friends at a blind tasting. Breaking Bourbon noted, honestly, that the long finish transformed the whiskey enough that neither the Tennessee bourbon nor the stout announces itself obviously — what's left is something new. Expect a nose of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and dried fruit over caramel and aged oak, opening into a palate of cocoa, dark cherry, molasses, and a coffee-tinged bitterness wrapped around the bourbon's vanilla and spice, finishing long with char and a faint stout-like roast. It sits alongside Bardstown's later Goose Island Bourbon County finish in a series that has also partnered with Foursquare, Amaro Nonino, Silver Oak, and Amrut.
