Amrut Indian Single Malt Whisky
Amrut Indian Single Malt is the original — the bottle Amrut launched in Glasgow in 2004 as India's first single malt, unpeated Himalayan-foothill barley aged in Bangalore heat, bottled at 46%. Amrut was founded in 1948; the distillery sits at 3,000 feet in Bangalore, where the tropical climate matures whisky three times faster than Scotland and the angels take 11% a year, so a four-year Amrut drinks like a twelve. The Classic is six-row Indian barley, distilled in copper pots, aged around four years mainly in ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled at 46% without chill filtration or color. The Whiskey Wash's Amrut guide: caramel, honey, and oak spice on the nose; toffee and biscuit with tropical fruit on the palate. Expect a bright, sweet, malty whisky — honey, barley sugar, mango, vanilla, gentle oak — with the heat-aging showing as depth beyond its years and a clean, medium finish. Honest note: the entry to the most respected distillery outside Scotland, Japan, and America — for the Speyside drinker curious about India, the Highball, and the reason Jim Murray started paying attention; Fusion is where it gets serious. Neat or with a drop of water. Amrut, the original.
