Black Maple Hill Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey
Black Maple Hill returned to its Kentucky roots in July 2026, when Rare Character Whiskey Co. of Lexington — the independent bottler behind Pride of Anderson County, Brook Hill, and Old Cassidy — revived one of the most storied sourced-bourbon labels in American whiskey. First launched in 2000 by California's CVI Brands, Black Maple Hill was never a distillery, but its early releases, produced by Julian Van Winkle III and widely believed to include wheated Stitzel-Weller stock, built a genuine cult following before aged Kentucky supply ran dry and production shifted to Oregon in 2014. Rare Character's relaunch restores what made the original special: selected Kentucky straight bourbon barrels, the brand's original 95-proof presentation (47.5% ABV), and classic, well-aged bourbon character, bottled in 700ml. This standard Small Batch is the entry point to the revived line — younger than the flagship 11 Year but built on the same philosophy of mature Kentucky barrels and balance. Expect caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, brown sugar, and dried fruit on the nose, with toffee, baking spice, and gentle rye warmth on the palate and a clean, lingering finish. As a very new release, independent critic reviews are still filling in, but for fans of the original label this is the first accessible chance in over a decade to taste Black Maple Hill as it was meant to be.
