Distillerie du Peyrat Rare Prestige VSOP Organic Cognac
Rare Prestige is Distillerie du Peyrat's organic VSOP, a Fins Bois Cognac aged a minimum of seven years, well beyond the four-year VSOP requirement. The Rault family has distilled in the Charentes since 1705 and works from Houlette, 10 km east of Cognac, where Jean-François Rault converted to organic farming in 1998 and built the top-selling organic Cognac label in the United States. The family's 30 hectares of Ugni Blanc lie in the Fins Bois cru a few kilometres from Grande Champagne, the Cognacs are certified by Ecocert and the USDA, and the distillery runs on 300 square metres of solar panels. Wine is distilled on its lees in Charentais copper pot stills using the house's fatty distillation, then aged in French oak and bottled at 40% ABV. The producer describes vanilla, plum and apricot on the nose and a refined, round, mellow palate; reviewers note caramel, baked pear, marzipan and citrus. Wine Enthusiast awarded 95 points and a Best of 2017 listing, Paul Pacult gave four stars and Highly Recommended in both The Spirit Journal (2009) and The New Kindred Spirits (2021), and Cigar & Spirits scored it 91.
