Dos Hombres began when Breaking Bad co-stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul went looking through Oaxaca for a mezcal worth putting their names on, eventually landing in San Luis del Río — a small village in the foothills of the Sierra Madre with deep, generations-old mezcal tradition — and partnering with mezcalero Gregorio Velasco. Espadín agave grows roughly six to eight years before harvest, then gets roasted in underground pit ovens for seven to ten days, milled, naturally fermented, and distilled with mountain spring water. It's a joven (unaged) mezcal bottled at 84 proof (42% ABV). What sets it apart from most espadín is restraint: reviewers consistently note the smoke is unusually mild for the category, sitting behind bright fruit rather than dominating. Expect warm apple orchard, white flowers, Meyer lemon, and a whisper of toast on the nose, with green apple, mango, orange peel, gentle smoke, and toasted almond on the palate, finishing bright, saline, and slightly drying. Reception is honestly split — some drinkers call it the best celebrity mezcal on the market and a favorite in cocktails, while critics at Paste and elsewhere find it approachable but simple, clearly aimed at newcomers rather than seasoned mezcal drinkers. Fair on both counts: it's an excellent entry point and a genuinely good mixer, especially in a mezcal margarita or the brand's own Dos Fashioned.
