Ezra Brooks 99 Proof Bourbon Whiskey
Ezra Brooks 99 is the standard Ezra with the proof turned up — 99 proof, because 100 would have made it a bonded bourbon and Lux Row wanted it to stay a blend. Ezra Brooks launched in 1957 as a knockoff of Jack Daniel's during a Jack shortage — square bottle, charcoal filtering, Old No. 7-style label — and has been a Luxco brand since 1993; since 2018 it's been made at Lux Row Distillers in Bardstown, the company's own distillery, after decades of Heaven Hill sourcing. The 99 is Kentucky straight bourbon from a 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley mash bill, aged in new charred oak, charcoal-filtered in the house tradition, and bottled at 99 proof in the square bottle. Bourbon Culture reviewed the Lux Row lineup. Expect the standard Ezra's caramel, vanilla, and charcoal-softened corn with more weight, heat, and spice: brown sugar, cinnamon, toasted oak, and a faint smoky sweetness on a medium-full body with a warm, moderately long finish. Honest note: this is the best bottle Ezra Brooks makes at a price that's hard to argue with — a $20-ish bourbon that stands up in an Old Fashioned, and the reason enthusiasts started paying attention to the brand again. For an Old Fashioned, a Boulevardier, or a highball. Ezra, at 99.
