Fiddler Small Batch Wheated Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Fiddler is the flagship of ASW Distillery, Atlanta's hometown whiskey maker — only the second legal distillery in the city since Prohibition, founded in 2016 by UGA friends Jim Chasteen, Charlie Thompson, and master distiller Justin Manglitz, an old-time string musician who gave the line its name and its philosophy: take a great base, then fiddle with it until it sings. The base here is a sourced high-wheat bourbon with a genuinely unusual mash bill — 51% corn, 45% wheat, 4% malted barley — more than double the wheat content of the famous allocated wheated bourbons. ASW's contribution is the finishing: aged at least six years, with roughly a quarter of each batch double-oaked in a second new charred barrel, then blended in small four-barrel batches and bottled at 92 proof, non-chill filtered with no color added. Whiskeyfellow found dill, mint, oak, cinnamon, and brown sugar on the nose with rich caramel underneath; Tortured Bourbon landed on toffee, clove, and citrus zest with a touch of malt sweetness; the distillery's own notes call out graham cracker, salted caramel, and nutmeg. The high wheat gives it a soft, silky texture that reads more approachable than most bourbons at this proof. Built, in ASW's words, for campfires, concerts, and a killer Old Fashioned — and one Hi Proof customer reports being on their third bottle. Georgia's answer to the wheated bourbon chase, minus the allocation drama.
