Granja Nómada Espadín Mezcal
Granja Nómada Espadín is a 750ml bottling of cultivated Espadín (Agave angustifolia), with each batch drawing 10 to 15 tons of eight-year-old plants from three nearby farms. Mezcalero Hugo Quinto makes it at his family palenque in San Dionisio Ocotepec, in the Central Valley of Tlacolula, Oaxaca. Piñas are cooked for six days in an earthen pit oven fired with locally chopped oak, crushed with a stone tahona, and fermented in open-air wooden vats for up to 15 days. Distillation is done twice in copper stills, with only the hearts of the first run carried into the second, and the mezcal is bottled at 42% ABV (84 proof) at a facility about ten minutes from the palenque. The producer describes a smoky aroma with bright citrus, then light florals, natural agave sweetness and gentle citrus on the palate. A friendly, clean mezcal for sipping neat from a copita, or for mixing into a Paloma, Mezcal Margarita or Oaxaca Old Fashioned.
