Heitz Cellar was founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz, and Joe's 1966 Martha's Vineyard bottling was Napa Valley's first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, setting a standard the winery has upheld for six decades, now under the Lawrence family and winemaker Brittany Sherwood. Trailside Vineyard is an 85-acre site on the east side of Rutherford between the Silverado Trail and Conn Creek, part of the Heitz estate since 1984 and farmed organically block by block across a patchwork of clones and soils. Each lot is aged separately in oak for four years, the classic Heitz regime, before the final blend is assembled, and the wine releases at around 14.5% ABV in a 750ml bottle presented in its wood box. Wine Spectator rated the 2018 at 94 points, calling it sleek and focused with damson plum, dark cherry and cedar and a drinking window of 2026 through 2040, while Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave 93, noting bay leaf and mint over cherry with a silky, firm palate. Rutherford dust, cassis and cedar make it a natural with roast leg of lamb or dry-aged steak. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
