High West blends bourbon and rye whiskey with demerara sugar and bitters, then rests the assembled cocktail in oak barrels so the sugar, bitters and whiskey integrate and pick up extra wood character before bottling at 86 proof.
Drinkhacker rated it a B+, noting a nose heavy with sweet orange, almost to a candy level, and a chocolatey, bittersweet finish, and judged it the more successful of High West's two barrel-finished cocktails. High West's notes describe cassia bark, licorice root, eucalyptus, orange spice tea and sandalwood on the nose, orange zest, dried cherry, sassafras, allspice and orange cinnamon buns on the palate, and black pepper, cola and cinnamon on the finish. Pour it over a big ice cube, express an orange peel and you are done. Great for hosting or for a cabin bar.
