Home Base Bitter Liqueur
Home Base Bitter is the first liqueur release from Home Base Spirits, the Berkeley, California whiskey company launched in 2015 by Oakland-raised twin sisters Ali and Sam Blatteis. The producer describes it as a West Coast take on an amaro-style bitter liqueur: a California grape brandy, distilled from Lodi-grown white Zinfandel grapes at Hinterhaus Distilling in Arnold, CA, is infused with winter-harvested citrus, fruit and botanicals, then bittered with gentian root and bitter orange. The ingredient list for the current Winter Expression (Bitter Batch 5, released March 2024) includes bitter orange peel, lemon and orange zest, gentian root from San Francisco Herb Company, fresh organic California pomegranate and orange peel, and an oleo saccharum made from Meyer lemon peel. It is bottled at 34.7% ABV. Home Base says the liqueur can be sipped neat as a digestif or mixed into cocktails, and its own tasting notes call out zest, citrus, florals, bitterness and candied orange peel. The sisters blend and age everything at their Berkeley warehouse and have won a Good Food Award in the spirits category.
