Home Base Spirits Single Malt Whiskey
Home Base Single Malt Whiskey won the 2023 Good Food Award in the spirits category for Home Base Spirits, the Berkeley, California company founded in 2015 by twin sisters Ali and Sam Blatteis. The producer describes it as a Californian single malt built to express West Coast terroir. Batch 11 (released July 2025) is 100% malted barley split between Mecca Grade Estate Malt in Madras, Oregon, which grows and malts its own grain, and Woodland, CA barley malted at Admiral Maltings in Alameda. It was distilled and barreled in February 2022 at Sutherland Distilling in Livermore, CA, then matured about three and a half years in ex-Home Base Bourbon casks at the company's Berkeley warehouse so the grain, not new oak, leads. It is bottled at 46% ABV. Home Base's own notes describe earthy, grassy aromas with maple, cream soda, caramel and honey nut on the palate, and suggest it neat, over ice or in Scotch-style cocktails. The whiskey is Craft Malt Certified and Verified Water Certified; label art is by ceramicist Chinzalee Sonami.
