Leviathan California Cabernet Sauvignon
Leviathan was launched in 2004 by Andy Erickson, the Napa winemaker behind Favia, Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and Ovid, with one goal: a single Cabernet-based blend each vintage, free from appellation restraints and assembled from notable vineyards across California, with Nicole Hayden managing grower relations. The current release is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petite Sirah, 5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, much of it from rocky hillside sites with volcanic soils that give the wine its power. It is aged in French oak barrels and bottled at 14.8% ABV. Erickson's notes describe layered aromas of Luxardo cherry and black currant with leather, coffee, wet slate, star anise and vanilla bean, and a structured, composed palate of fine tannins and earthy, savory depth that is approachable now yet built to cellar. The previous vintage earned 94 points from James Suckling, 92 from Wine Advocate, 91 from Jeb Dunnuck and 90 from Vinous. Serve it with grilled lamb, smoked brisket or a mushroom-topped burger. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
