Minhwa Spirits Yong Original Soju 80 Proof
Yong, named for the Korean word for dragon, is the flagship soju from Minhwa Spirits, the Korean-American craft distillery in Doraville, Georgia, founded by childhood friends James Kim and Ming Han Chung. Bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV), roughly double the strength of mass-market soju, it is made in the traditional distilled style from 100% rice and nuruk, the Korean fermentation starter, on a small-batch pot still, following a recipe passed down from Kim's grandfather. The four ingredients are Arkansas-grown Asian-variety rice, north Georgia spring water, yeast and nuruk imported from Korea; there are no sweeteners, preservatives or additives. Yong won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2024 and 2025 and was then named Best of Class in the soju category at The Tasting Alliance's 2025 competition, the first soju made outside Korea to take the top spot. At the 2024 USA Spirits Ratings it earned Gold with 90 points and was named Soju of the Year; judges noted a smooth, crisp spirit with savory flavors, a creamy sweet-potato palate and a long finish. A 2025 shelf talker describes it as mineral-driven and clean with grain, white pepper and green tea.
