Description: Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' rum is a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced to the strength and recipe specified by the Admiralty. It is made in accordance with the blending recipe that was used by the Royal Navy before the daily rum ration was discontinued on July 31, 1970.
The name 'Gunpowder Proof' refers to a method that was used by the Royal Navy to ensure that the sailors' rum ration was not watered down. Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the ship's "Pusser" would mix a bit of gunpowder with the rum and try to ignite it. If the mixture ignited, it was considered to be "at proof," meaning that it was the correct strength. If it didn't ignite, the Pusser could potentially be punished.
