Isle of Raasay Ex-Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Strength is a single-cask-type release from the young distillery founded in 2017 on the tiny Isle of Raasay, off the coast of Skye, and named Scottish Distillery of the Year. Its unpeated spirit was matured entirely in high-quality ex-Bordeaux red wine casks, delivered fresh to the island still stained red from the châteaux of southwest France, where the whisky takes on a pink hue that deepens to dark red over time.
Bottled at a natural cask strength of 127 proof (63.5% ABV), non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, in a 700mL bottle, it develops bold, fruity flavors: dried fruit, sultana and grape on the nose, then Christmas cake and bread pudding on a rich, spicy palate, finishing long with red-wine tannin and warmth. Released in alternate years as peated and unpeated, each edition is a limited bottling for collectors of Raasay's cask experiments and best explored with a splash of water.
