Redwood Empire Rocket Top Bottled in Bond Rye Whiskey is the first rye distilled entirely in-house by Redwood Empire Distilling in Graton, California, and a bonded whiskey with an unusual recipe. The mash bill is 87% rye, 7% malted barley and 6% wheat, distilled in spring 2016 and aged five years in new charred oak on the Sonoma County coast before bottling in bond at 100 proof. This is Batch 2, released in 2022, named for a famous coast redwood known as Rocket Top.
Breaking Bourbon rated the inaugural release 3 out of 5 and called it a satisfying first release that continues Redwood Empire's run of quality whiskey, with graham cracker, cherry and parsley moving into cinnamon, caramel and oak on the nose, toffee and butterscotch with a buttery mouthfeel, minty malt and dried fruit on the palate, and a finish of leather, black pepper and sweet cinnamon. The touch of wheat softens the edges of the high-rye mash, making it an approachable sipper as well as a serious Manhattan rye. Redwood Empire plants a tree for every bottle sold.
