Résidence Organic VSOP Cognac

Résidence Spirits is a small organic house in the Charentes built by Mathieu Leboeuf, who grew up among the region's vineyards and copper stills, and his wife Tamiko, whose Australian upbringing and Sri Lankan roots shape the brand's outlook. Its credo is to innovate while respecting tradition, and it works with more than twenty organic growers in an appellation where organic vineyards are under two percent of the total. The VSOP is a blend of three crus, Bons Bois, Fins Bois and Petite Champagne, made from organically farmed Ugni Blanc on clay-limestone soils. The wine is slowly double distilled in a traditional Charentais copper pot still, then aged a minimum of five years in Limousin oak, a mix of new and used barrels with fine and coarse grain in equal parts, before bottling at 40% ABV. The producer describes a coppery colour, a nose of dried apricot, grapefruit, a hint of bergamot, oak tannin, fresh vanilla and toasted bread, and a rich, vinous palate of exotic fruit, plum and oak ending on a delicate smoky note. Wine Enthusiast scored it 92 points and placed it among its 100 Best Spirits of 2023.
