Roaming Road Spirits is the independent bottling project of Mike Gilmore, a former Wyoming liquor store owner who built a reputation as one of the country's most respected barrel pickers before launching the brand in September 2024. Every release is a single cask, bottled at cask strength in a one-off lot of 250 or fewer 750ml bottles at Bardstown Bourbon Company in Kentucky, and never repeated. This one is a rare origin for the American shelf: an 11-year-old Thai rum, distilled from molasses on a column still and bottled unsweetened at 59.5% ABV (119 proof), with no added sugar. Thailand has a long cane-spirit tradition but very little of its aged rum leaves the country as a single-cask bottling, which is what makes this cask interesting rather than just unusual. Tasting notes logged by drinkers on RumX describe citrus, clove and a musty, cellar-like note on the nose, then baking spices, clove and black pepper on the palate, a spice-forward profile that stands up well to a little water. Serve it neat or with a few drops to open it up.
