Roaming Road Spirits is the independent bottling project of Mike Gilmore, a former Wyoming liquor store owner who built a reputation as one of the country's most respected barrel pickers before launching the brand in September 2024. Every release is a single cask, bottled at cask strength in a one-off lot of 250 or fewer 750ml bottles at Bardstown Bourbon Company in Kentucky, and never repeated. This cask comes from Mauritius, the Indian Ocean island whose cane fields and distilleries date to the French and British colonial sugar economy, and whose producers today make both molasses rum and fresh-cane-juice rhum agricole alongside the sugar refineries. It is a 12-year-old single cask, bottled at cask strength with no blending and no added sugar, and Mauritian rum of this age is rarely seen as an independent bottling in the United States at all. Mauritius sits at the crossroads of French, British and Indian rum traditions, and its aged rums tend to be lighter and more aromatic than Caribbean molasses rum, which is why cask-strength examples reward slow sipping rather than mixing.
