Robert Craig founded his winery in 1990 after years running the Hess Collection, with a single idea: small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon from high-elevation sites in each of Napa's mountain appellations. The Spring Mountain District bottling comes from steep, dry-farmed volcanic slopes near 2,000 feet on the Mayacamas range west of St. Helena, where thin, rocky red-clay soils and afternoon sun above the fog line give small berries, intense color and firm mountain tannin. Recent vintages have been built around roughly 88% Cabernet Sauvignon with 12% Cabernet Franc, aged about 20 months in 80% new French oak, and bottled at 15.0% ABV. The house style shows ripe black and purple fruit, ferrous minerality and layers of licorice, cedar and baking spice over firm tannins and bright acidity. The 2018 earned 95 points from James Suckling for blackcurrants, plums, cherries, bay leaf, pine needle and graphite, and 94 from Vinous, which recommended a few years in the cellar. Decant 30 minutes and serve with ribeye, wild mushrooms or aged Gouda. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
