Roots Kanela True Cinnamon Liqueur
Roots Kanela revives a 15th-century tentura recipe from Greece's Ionian Islands, a cinnamon-and-clove tincture once taken as a herbal remedy. It is made by Roots, the craft liqueur label founded in 2013 by brothers Manos and Nikolas Smyrlakis, whose maternal family has run the Callicounis Distillery in Kalamata since 1850, Greece's oldest continuously operating distillery. Formerly sold under the name Tentura, Kanela is built on true Ceylon cinnamon, clove buds, nutmeg and citrus, all natural ingredients with no artificial additives, and bottled at 24% ABV in a 700ml bottle. Reviewers describe a strong cinnamon aroma with a hint of sweetness, an earthy core of vanilla and cedar carrying baking spice and sweet peppermint, and a sweet cedar note on the finish. The brothers designed Roots for export, and the range is poured at bars including The Savoy's American Bar, The Aviary and Angel's Share. Kanela is served neat after a meal, in a Back to the Roots Mule with lime and ginger beer, or as a replacement for half the rum in tiki drinks.
