Roots Rakomelo is a bottled version of the traditional Greek winter drink of raki warmed with honey and spices, which islanders long used as a soothing remedy. It is made by Roots, the craft liqueur label founded in 2013 by brothers Manos and Nikolas Smyrlakis, whose maternal family has run N.G. Callicounis Distillery in Kalamata since 1850. The base is raki, a grape pomace distillate (tsipouro), blended with mountain thyme honey from Mani and cinnamon and clove from the Aegean Islands following a centuries-old recipe, with no added sugar or artificial additives, and bottled at 24% ABV in a 700ml bottle. The producer describes a strong, fruity and slightly nutty aroma and a naturally sweet, honeyed and spirited taste with a rich, delicate mouthfeel and spices in the background. Difford's Guide notes a clear coppery amber color, honey, raisins and clove on the nose, cinnamon leading on a honeyed, lightly sweet base, and a lingering cinnamon and clove finish. Roots suggests it neat, warmed in winter, or split with rye whiskey and orange zest in a Rakomelo Old Fashioned. The range is poured at bars including The Savoy's American Bar and Angel's Share.
