Scapegrace Black Gin is the world's first naturally black gin, created by Scapegrace Distillery in New Zealand, founded in 2014 by brothers-in-law Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin and distilled under master distiller Anthony Lawry. It starts with a grain spirit distilled in small batches with the brand's signature twelve botanicals and cut with water drawn from the Southern Alps, then takes its inky color from a second layer of natural ingredients: butterfly pea flower, aronia berry, saffron, local sweet potato and pineapple. No dyes are used; the anthocyanin pigment in butterfly pea flower reacts to acidity, so the gin shifts from jet black to lavender and plum the moment tonic or citrus hits the glass. Bottled at 83.2 proof (41.6% ABV) in a 750ml bottle. The distillery describes pineapple and lemon on the nose followed by spicy juniper, a full-bodied palate of pepper, tropical fruit and a hint of mint, and a finish of fresh-cut grass, sweet earth and herbs.
