Seelbach's Private Reserve Amburana Finished Bourbon
Amburana Finished Bourbon is one of the recurring Seelbach's Private Reserve releases from the Louisville craft-spirits retailer and bottler founded by Blake Riber. Batch 003, released July 2024, is a Kentucky straight bourbon from a 78% corn, 12% rye, 10% malted barley mash, aged six years and ten months, then given a short eight-day finish in first-use Amburana barrels before bottling at 115.3 proof (57.65% ABV). Amburana is a Brazilian hardwood prized in cachaca aging that gives up heavy cinnamon, vanilla and baking-spice flavor very quickly, which is why Seelbach's keeps the finish measured in days rather than months. Breaking Bourbon scored Batch 003 a 4, calling it an extremely big-tasting Amburana finish that manages to find balance, with cinnamon, tree bark, cigar leaf and marzipan on the nose, cinnamon churro, apple pie and charred oak on the palate, and amaretto, glazed donut and molasses on the finish. Other batches have run around 116 proof with a ten-day finish and 1,284 bottles; the producer describes cinnamon rolls, vanilla frosting, dried cherry and banana bread with a long holiday-spice finish.
