Timo Marshall's English family had been making sloe gin for generations before he and his wife Ashby opened Spirit Works Distillery in Sebastopol, California in 2012 — and this bottle is their tribute to that inherited recipe. Everything at Spirit Works starts from scratch: whole organic red winter wheat, milled, mashed, fermented, and distilled entirely on-site into their own house gin, which then gets infused with whole organic sloe berries sourced from Europe. The result pours a deep crimson, close to cherry, and both Christopher Null at Drinkhacker and Kara Newman at Wine Enthusiast praised it independently — Null calling it a sweet-and-sour, cranberry-sauce-like sloe gin with mint, orange peel, and rhubarb notes (giving it an A), and Newman describing a bold cherry pie filling aroma with sweet-tart cherry and Christmas baking spice reminiscent of mulled wine. It also picked up a Silver Medal at the Bartender Spirits Awards. Bottled at 27% ABV, it's noticeably less tart than old-school English sloe gins, which makes it easy to sip on its own, though it also works well as a more characterful stand-in for sweet vermouth in classic cocktails.
