Terra de Promissio is a 50-acre vineyard in Sonoma County that Diana and Charles Karren planted in 2002 after visiting more than a hundred possible sites. It has a slight elevation, a southwest exposure and a cooling wind, and fog rolls in from the Petaluma Gap every night, which slows ripening and keeps acidity high. Fruit is harvested at night to stay cold, and winemaker James MacPhail visits regularly to advise on pruning and fruit maintenance as part of The Calling's Single Vineyard Series. Bottled at 14.0% alcohol, this Pinot Noir has a perfumed nose of bright red fruit and citrus. The palate has elegant texture and layers of complexity, with red berries, dried herbs and citrus peel, and a hint of earthiness. It is well balanced, with smooth tannins and measured acidity, and the finish is long and savory. The wine is meant to show what one vineyard tastes like rather than a blend of many. Pair it with roast duck, herbed pork loin, grilled salmon or mushroom-topped flatbread. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
