Vicario Quintessence is the bitter, herbal amaro-style liqueur from Vicario Spirits, founded by Renato Vicario and Janette Wesley, who farm organically in his native Italy and her native South Carolina and who grew the brand out of Vicario's book Italian Liqueurs after years recreating traditional recipes with minimal filtration and ingredients largely from their own gardens. The name refers to the fifth essence, the pure substance of the heavens in old texts, and the liqueur is built to match: a blend of herbs and spices sourced from several regions of the world, extracted into a 100% non-GMO neutral wheat spirit with no caramelized sugar and no color additives, made in Greer, South Carolina, and bottled at 30% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Vicario is upfront that this one is aimed at bitter lovers and is more demanding than typical amari, bold and deeply herbal rather than soft and sweet.
