Saint Benevolence exists because a Miami real estate developer went to Haiti in 1979 with a Habitat for Humanity construction team and never really left. Calvin Babcock went on to co-found Living Hope Haiti in 2002 with Dr. Rev. Gueillant Dorcinvil — a Saint Michel native, third-generation sugarcane farmer and clairin producer with degrees in agronomy and a doctorate in divinity. In 2017, Calvin's son Chase convinced the reverend to bottle his family's rum, and the brand launched with a mission that isn't marketing garnish: 100% of profits fund Living Hope Haiti, Ti Kay, and Innovating Health International, supporting medical care, cancer screening, education, infrastructure, and over three million meals a year. The rums are worth buying on merit alone. The clairins come from the Dorcinvil Distillery in Saint Michel de l'Attalaye — a field blend of indigenous cane varieties, first-press juice and cane syrup fermented separately with native yeast for 8-10 days, then distilled in handmade 200-liter copper pot stills fueled by dried cane fiber, bottled at 100 proof. The range spans the unaged Rum Clairin, an aged version resting 18-22 months in new American oak, a Mango expression honoring Haiti's tradition of fruit infusion, and a 5 Year Caribbean blend from the Dominican Republic and Barbados.
