Saint Benevolence 5 Years Old American Oak Barrels Caribbean Rum
Saint Benevolence, owned by Calvin Babcock, gives 100% of its profit to charitable work in Haiti, mainly in the town of Saint Michel de l'Attalaye, where the money has gone to schools, bridges, wells, an orphanage and a medical clinic. The 5 Year Caribbean Rum was the brand's first release and it blends two neighboring rum styles: a pot-distilled sugarcane-juice rum from the Dominican Republic and a column-distilled molasses rum from Barbados. Each component is aged separately for five years in once-used American oak bourbon barrels in its home country, then shipped to Florida, blended in small batches and bottled at 84 proof (42% ABV) in a 750ml bottle. The importer's notes put shortbread, orange blossom, candy corn and ripe peach on the nose, with ripe plantain, vanilla wafer, dried pineapple and wood spice on the palate; Rum Journey's review finds a vanilla-forward nose with toasted coconut, black cherry and apricot, allspice and nutmeg on the palate and a medium finish with a touch of bitter baking chocolate. It is pitched as an entry point for whiskey drinkers coming to rum, and it works in a Daiquiri, a punch, or as a gold-rum swap in an Old Fashioned.
