Cardenxe Sotol de la Sierra
Cardenxe is a terroir-driven sotol brand founded by Italian-Mexican music producer Luigi Ambrosi and named for canto cardenche, the near-extinct a cappella folk tradition of northern Mexico; each label represents a different landscape within the sotol denomination of origin. Sotol de la Sierra is the mountain-forest expression, wild-harvested at around 2,100 meters in the Sierra Madre Occidental near Ciudad Madera, Chihuahua, where the plant is known locally as sereque. It is made from 100% Dasylirion wheeleri at the Madera distillery under master distiller Bienvenido Fernández, distilled on small copper pot stills, and bottled unaged at 40% ABV (80 proof). The producer describes a highly aromatic, punchy nose with deep earthy notes, a vegetal palate of warm grasses, eucalyptus and mossy forest floor giving way to nuttiness, dark earth and chocolate, and a refreshing, herbaceous finish. Sotol de la Sierra won Gold at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the brand also received a Platinum SIP Award. The producer recommends it neat, over a large ice cube, or in a Sotol Paloma or Highball with sparkling water and lime.
