Cardenxe is a terroir-driven sotol brand founded by Italian-Mexican music producer Luigi Ambrosi, who first tasted sotol in Durango while recording the region's canto cardenche folk singers; the brand takes its name from that tradition and its labels from the 1920s Estridentismo art movement. Sotol de Pradera is the grassland expression, produced near Nombre de Dios in Durango at a historic hacienda distillery now run on solar power by a new generation of brothers, with Juan Manuel Conde listed as the maestro. It is made from 100% wild-harvested Dasylirion cedrosanum from the high prairie and double distilled in copper alembics by traditional methods, then bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) as an unaged blanco. The producer describes toasted corn with warm, rustic earthiness on the nose, dry hay, supple leather and gentle sweet earth on the palate, and a long finish with a hint of burnt corn. A Mezcal Reviews contributor found it creamy and lactic with roasted elote, dried hay, salty caramel and a slightly ashy finish, naming it a personal favorite among six sotols. The producer suggests it neat, over a large cube, or in a Sotol Mule or Old Fashioned.
