Habitation Velier Distillerie de Port au Prince 2021 Haiti Pure Single Rhum

Habitation Velier Distillerie de Port au Prince 2021 is an unaged, high-ester white rhum from Velier's own distillery in Haiti, bottled under the Habitation Velier label that Luca Gargano launched in 2015 to showcase pure single rums, meaning 100 percent pot still spirit from a single distillery with nothing added. Distillerie de Port-au-Prince, also known as Providence, was built by Velier in the Haitian capital and fired its first spirit in 2019, working with fresh juice from Cristalline sugarcane, a native Haitian variety grown around Saint-Michel-de-l'Attalaye, fermented long and wild and run twice through a pot still, first to a low wine and then to around 72 percent, before being reduced with water and bottled straight, with no time in wood and no sugar added. The 2021 distillation carries an ester count of 289 grams per hectoliter of pure alcohol printed on the label, high-ester territory that puts it closer to a Jamaican funk bomb than a typical agricole, and it is bottled at 59% ABV, 118 proof, in a 700ml bottle. RumX tasters describe a nose of vegetal cane, polish and citrus, a palate of raw sugarcane with salt, iodine and green vegetal notes, and a long, pungent, slightly bitter cane finish. A serious sipping white for agricole and clairin drinkers, and a wild Ti' Punch or Daiquiri base for anyone who wants the funk turned all the way up. Habitation Velier bottlings are small and allocated, and the Haitian releases are among the rarest in the range.
