LaRoche-Vacquié Vintage Haut Armagnac 1998 Wood Box
This 1998 vintage comes from LaRoche-Vacquié, a family estate above Lectoure in Gascony and one of the last producers in Haut-Armagnac, the sub-region that makes roughly 1% of all Armagnac. Phylloxera wiped out most Haut-Armagnac vineyards in the late 19th century and the land turned to cereals and orchards; Bruno and Sylvie Compagnon bought the estate in 1986 as a prune and apple farm, replanted vines in 1990, and Bruno was made a Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit in 1997 for reviving the appellation. The 25 hectares of Ugni Blanc and Colombard sit on limestone with a thin layer of clay in a mostly Mediterranean climate, farmed organically since 2008 with a solar farm powering the estate since 2011. Like all the house's vintages, the 1998 is single distilled, aged in a single sessile oak cask and bottled at cask strength, unfiltered, with each bottle hand-sealed, dated and numbered. It spent 28 years in oak before bottling at 49% ABV, with 48 bottles released in a wooden presentation box. The producer describes a bourbon-like nose, a touch of rancio and a long exotic-fruit finish. The estate took Best Armagnac at Fest'Armagnac 2026.
