Caffo's story begins at the end of the 19th century, when master distiller Giuseppe Caffo started distilling grape pomace on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, formally founding the company when he bought an old distillery in Santa Venerina in 1915. His sons Sebastiano and Santo later expanded the business across the strait to Limbadi, Calabria — a district famous for red wine production, which meant abundant fresh pomace and wine for distilling — and the family has run it ever since, now four generations deep under Gruppo Caffo 1915. The flagship is Vecchio Amaro del Capo, one of the most widely consumed amari in all of Italy: 29 Calabrian herbs, flowers, fruits, and roots (sweet and bitter orange, tangerine, chamomile, licorice, anise, mint, juniper, hyssop) macerated in pure alcohol, then gently distilled, traditionally served straight from the freezer as the definitive southern Italian digestif. But the range runs much deeper — a Red Hot Edition of the amaro built around Calabrian chili peppers, Limoncino, Amaretto, Sambuca, Borsci San Marzano elixir, aged grappa from the group's Friuli distillery, and Calabrian licorice-based liqueurs from their own Vibo Valentia plant. Genuine, family-run Calabrian tradition, from an entire island's worth of botanicals.
